Local Politicians Speak Up On Coleg Sir Gar Job losses
Staff at Coleg Sir Gar have been given support in their battle against redundancies. 89 staff members are facing redundancy, around 10% of the workforce, due to budget cuts. Local MP Adam Price and Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM have issued their support and have written to the Assembly’s education Minister, Jane Hutt, urging her to re-visit funding arrangements to provide further funding for the institution.
Adam Price MP said:
“I am astonished that these cuts have been proposed to the sector at this time given the current economic hardships. If these proposals are carried through the college may have to discontinue some of its courses in addition to loosing valuable and experienced staff. This would be a big blow for education in the county.”
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM who has previously raised his concerns during the Assembly’s question time added:
“I recently met with the Principal of Coleg Sir Gar to hear the concerns they had. These cuts with have a detrimental effect on the college, staff and students. We have urged the Minister to take into account the impact on education in the county and the economic impact of shedding so many jobs in the hope that there is a chance the funding arrangements can be amended.”
